An avid runner. A golfer. A hot rod and NASCAR fan. Surfing the internet for motorcycles. Taking the boat out on a sunny day. Fixin' things around the house. Baking banana bread and cupcakes for fellow roadrunners. These are some of the descriptions that could be listed in Dave's online dating profile, if he had to create one. A seasoned runner and one of the club's oldest (not in biological age but in membership years) members is Dave Lamb, this month's featured profile. One of the perks of participating in the long runs on Sunday mornings, aside from getting in a lot of mileage and burning tons of calories, to hang out with your fellow road runners to chat and nibble on recovery or pseudo breakfast food.
is the opportunity Dave makes that happen nearly every weekend by generously bringing his most and yummy-licious 4 banana bread - even when he's not running. "I would get stuff at the store and then they'd stop selling so I started making my own. If I wanted to eat something, I'd just make it. I had all the stuff that's needed to bake, plus it didn't cost much." That was how and why Dave started baking. 12 years later, roadrunners still love his banana bread.
Dave began running 39 years ago while he was in high school. Having smoked and consumed more than his share of alcohol over the years, he started picking up running again some years later and now describes it as an addiction. "I can't quit now. Running keeps me in shape and prevents me from getting fatter, and it's healthy" he says. Dave's race portfolio includes completion of six LA Marathons and one Santa Clarita Marathon, with this year's LA Marathon being the most memorable. "I ran with no pain. I didn't have any problems and was happy to be out there, and it was fun," Dave describes his experience. He typically participates in the LA Marathon because training time preceding the race is most ideal for him to train. He said since it tends to rain (LA people call it a "storm," while others call it "sprinkles.") during the winter months, he gets less construction assignments to keep him busy which affords him more time to train.
Contrary to the social norm of other runners on the team, Dave does not have a current goal time or race. Rather, he just runs. "Everyone seems to always be in a good mood. The ones with the goals are the ones who aren't in a good mood. There's only a few,"expressing his non-competitive approach to running, which is also a strategy he uses to prevent injury. Dave was hoping to run the Maui Marathon in the fall, but an injury has delayed his plans indefinitely. His marathon PR is an impressive 3:38:50.
By the Numbers....
